About Us
The Music Educators Association of New Jersey is a statewide, non-profit organization that was founded in 1927.
Membership
Approximately 300 private piano teachers.
Goals
To provide a professional association for piano teachers, emphasizing both personal growth and the improvement of teaching skills. To contribute to and enhance the learning experience of piano students.
Communication
The Glissando newsletter is published and sent to members bi-monthly every September to June.
Fees
- Active membership is $50.
- Associate membership (retired members and supporters) is $25.
- Student fees vary by event.
Scholarships
Student Summer Camp Scholarships and College Scholarships are available for students who qualify.
Teacher Events
- Monthly meetings for teachers at the Madison Public Library.
- Pedagogues, Guest Artists and Performers: A variety of topics each year may include Teaching Materials, Methods and Problems, Composers, Musical Form and Style, History, Performance Practice and Interpretation, the Business of Teaching.
- Master Classes: held in June, featuring qualified students from the Young Artist Category of Auditions.
- Scherzo Club: a monthly performance and social club for teachers. Meetings are held in various homes.
Student Events
- Auditions: Levels from Elementary to Young Artist are held in May and June at five colleges throughout the state. An optional theory test may be taken at each level. Critiques and awards are given.
- Competition Event: critiques, awards, recital.
- Student Recitals: held five times a year on Sunday afternoons. An opportunity for students of MEA teachers to perform publicly.
- Honors Recital: provides additional recognition of students who can prepare for auditions superbly and can perform any of their audition pieces publicly. Awards will be given.
